Low NOx boilers and their place in your environment

Category: General
Published:

Following the implementation of the Medium Combustion Plant Directive (MCPD), on which you can read more about here, the operation and emissions of boilers, has come under increasing scrutiny.

Under rules of the directive, plant operators are required to measure and report on emissions of NOx (nitrogen oxide) SO2 (sulphur dioxide) as well as dust. And any breaches of levels are to be reported to the appropriate government authority.

So, we ask you – what will it take for your plant to be compliant?

The Emission Limit Values (ELVs) set out by the MCPD legislation apply to boilers with a total aggregated rated thermal input less than 20MW and above 20MW, up to 20MW and is dependent on existing and new plant as well as the fuel type used. The Government website has details on how to work out your levels and provides further guidance on applying for a permit and monitoring results.

If you find that your current plant falls short of legislation, you don’t have to go it alone. As the UK’s leading industrial boiler manufacturer that offers comprehensive through-lifecycle support, we work with our customers as a full partner, offering design, manufacturing, support, servicing, upgrades, spares, hire and training from one source. This gives us the ability to support customers to identify the best solution to ensure plant and environments meet requirements.

Replacing a more than 30-year-old boiler with an efficient MCPD-compliant low NOx boiler

Mitsubishi UK Ltd is a global leader in the designdevelopment and manufacture of acrylic-based products. Having benefited from the longevity and reliability of our Wee Chieftain boiler for over three decades the company reached out to our team to support a project to replace the boiler

Our team was tasked to supply a replacement boiler that would be compliant with, what was new at the time, NOx regulations and to tie in with existing utilities and pipework. And to deliver a solution that would increase reliability and efficiency, whilst surpassing the latest MCPD emissions standards.

To meet this requirement, we installed a highly efficient MCPD-compliant ST28 low NOx boiler, complete with leading edge combustion and control equipment, including the associated mechanical and electrical integration to existing pipework and utilities.

The solution has increased efficiency and output and delivered a safety compliant plant that meets increased steam demands in accordance with current safety legislation, whilst delivering benchmark sub-50 mg/Nm3 emissions figures.

You can read the project in full here

Furthermore, through continuous development we have been able to further refine our Low NOx products to deliver even greater performance and lower emissionsExplore the range.

What are the steps to take?

The first step is for our team to come to site to understand your specific requirementsFollowing completion of a site combustion and equipment audit, our team will develop a fully costed solution that not only achieves complianceby reducing NOx emissions, but also improves boiler efficiency and future proof your boiler plant though burner and plant upgrades.

We currently have designed, manufactured and tested in-house a range of UltraNOx burners, comprising of three burner types which are dependent on capacity requirements. These burners meet ELVs as prescribed by the MCPD and deliver low operational noise and excellent fuel efficiency across the 700KW to 19MW output range. Each features a muffler and air intake silencer as standard and all of our burners are treated with a powder coated finish for maximum durability.

In addition, the UltraNOx technology is backward compatible and can be provided as a rapid combustion head upgrade for existing boiler plant to significantly cut NOx emissions and reduce CAPEX.

And as with all of our products, our burners are supported by our network of highly experienced UK-based service engineers.
